About Us
We Believe Everyone has an Equal Right to Quality Communication
Hearing Consumers
MT&A UNDERSTANDS
People who can hear often fear they will not be able to communicate with someone who is Deaf, mistakenly labeled hearing impaired. Spoken English is not the same as American Sign Language (ASL), and through partnership we will work with you to ensure appropriate diversity and inclusion.
Deaf - Sign Language Consumers
MT&A UNDERSTANDS
Deaf consumers are afraid they will not receive interpreting services and/or will not be understood. If a sign language interpreter does arrive- will the services be accurate, will the sign language interpreter be a good representation of their communication style, will they be friendly without overstepping ethical boundaries?
MT & Associates | Deaf Services (MT&A)
WE UNDERSTAND
Different from our competitors, we partner with all consumers to ensure appropriate/accurate services; as well as compliance and desire for excellence in diversity and inclusion.

Shelly Tisius
FOUNDER/CEO/STAFF INTERPRETER
First, I am a proud military wife and mom. When not acting as a wine connoisseur and when the weather is nice, I prefer to be on my screened in porch, take long hikes, or play at the park with my toddler.
Secondly, I am a lover of human services. I’ve worked in the service industry since 1995, and I cannot imagine any other career in which to spend my time. I am a lifelong learner primarily studying internal and external customer service continuously adapting and striving for excellence in service. The Deaf community is truly unique, and I feel so lucky to be a part of the community and practicing such a fun language.

Sign Language Interpreting & Captioning Services
Do you choose a professional service by price or by qualifications? Would you go to a Neurologist for an Orthopedic concern?
Price alone does not guarantee an accurate sign language interpretation. Any type of interpreter or translator services may not satisfy equal access to communication under the American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA). For example, foreign language interpreting/translation is covered under a different law than sign language interpreting because spoken languages are vastly different than signed languages. You want your sign language interpreting services to be as reputable as your business for your Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Hearing consumers. Use an expert who specializes in sign language interpreting services to meet industry standards and legal requirements.

Legal & ADA
Missouri & Illinois Law
ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act)
Missouri and Illinois laws require that Sign Language Interpreters be certified and licensed to work in the state. For more information on certification and skill level standards in Missouri, please visit http://www.mcdhh.mo.gov/; for Illinois, please visit www2.illinois.gov/idhhc.
MT&A sign language interpreting practice will verify that all Sign Language Interpreters are licensed and certified. When you contact us to schedule a sign language interpreter, we will ask you a variety of questions to ensure that we only send a sign language interpreter who is qualified to provide sign language interpreting services for your unique needs.
The ADA Law covers all individuals with disabilities and is lengthy. The purpose of the ADA law is to provide equal access to all individuals, even those with disabilities (including Deaf and hard of hearing). Refer to our Resources for more details.
Other Legal Requirements
Institutions who are certified, accredited (TJC/CARF), or those who receive state or federal funding typically have mandated requirements to provide sign language interpreters and equal access. By not providing sign language interpreting services your business could be at risk of losing certification, accreditation, funding, or be open to a lawsuit. It is important that you understand your requirements regarding sign language interpreting and equal access so you know when you are meeting them and when you are in violation. Please contact MT&A sign language interpreting practice so we can guide you as it pertains to your unique requirements.
