International Day of Sign Languages | Language is Power
On September 23rd, we celebrate the International Day of Sign Languages – a day that reminds us of a powerful truth: language is identity, language is pride, and language is power.
Why Sign Languages Matter
Sign languages are not “universal” or “simplified.” They are rich, complex, and fully recognized languages that carry culture, history, and community.
Take American Sign Language (ASL):
-
It has its own grammar and structure (not English in the hands).
-
It reflects cultural identity and community pride.
-
It allows Deaf people to express themselves fully and authentically.
Busting the Myths
X Myth: “Sign language is international.”
✔ Reality: Each country has its own sign language: ASL, BSL, LSF, and many more.
X Myth: “Sign language is just gestures.”
✔ Reality: It’s a full language, with syntax, idioms, and cultural nuances.
How to Celebrate the International Day of Sign Languages
You don’t need to be fluent to join in the celebration. Start small, start proud:
- Learn 5-10 new signs in ASL. (Think: hello, thank you, friend, ally, love.)
- Encourage your workplace or school to provide ASL classes or workshops.
- Amplify Deaf creators and educators who share ASL online. Visibility matters.
Language is Power
This day is a reminder: when sign languages are respected, Deaf people are respected.
So here’s your challenge: Learn one new sign today and teach it to someone else. Spread the knowledge, spread the power.
Because when we celebrate sign languages, we celebrate culture, identity, and belonging.
